Timothy and Nancy Kellers’ Songs of Jesus, Psalm 55:1-19

“Oh, that I had the wings of a dove, I would fly away and be at rest” “But it is you . . .” “God, who is enthroned of old and does not change — He will hear them and humble them.” These words are part of verses 6, 13, and 19 and they formed God’s breath prayer for me today. Betrayal by those closest to us happens to most human beings. Sometimes our parents abuse us. Sometimes we get into adult relationships where we are abused by addicts. Sometimes, in the name of ‘helping’ others, we co-dependently ‘enable’ others, thereby becoming abusers ourselves. Sometimes authority figures, bosses, police, even pastors abuse us. But no betrayal is as egregious as that of a close friend or relative, someone we trusted.

David understood both sides of betrayal. In Psalm 55 he is the betrayed and He cries out to God in his pain. But David also betrayed Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband to the point of murder. While Psalm 55 addresses David’s grief at a personal betrayal, the answer to either side of betrayal is the same . . . “God, who is enthroned of old and does not change —He will hear them and humble them.” No matter which side of a personal betrayal we are experiencing, trusting God provides both deliverance and forgiveness in the simple act of being humble and teachable. There is no obtainable ‘rest’ in running away. Only trust in God provides true rest.
